Following Virgile’s death, Numa, his faithful companion, requests the presence of John Spicher who was Virgile’s sworn enemy and the manager of the milk factory of the mountain village where they lived. Numa announces to him that he will not be able to acquire any land, nor any milk from Virgile’s properties, because, unbeknownst to everyone, Virgile has an heir. The day of the funeral, everyone discovers that Virgile’s son is black. He just arrived from Benin where he grew up.

A la mort de Virgile, Numa son fidèle compagnon, convie John Spicher, ennemi juré de Virgile et directeur de la laiterie du village. Il lui annonce qu’il ne pourra acquérir ni la terre, ni les quotas laitiers de Virgile, qu’il convoite depuis longtemps, car contre toute attente Virgile a un héritier. Le jour de l’enterrement, tous découvrent que le fils de Virgile, Vico, est métis. Il est tout juste arrivé du Bénin où il a grandi.
