Alice Inek, the iconic owner of a high-end watch factory, is found murdered in Saint-Jean Cathedral in Besançon, at the foot of the Horloge de Vérité. Captain Swann Coréa, recently transferred to the region, is put in charge of the investigation. She is joined by Lieutenant Antonin Serrault, a local native and the son of watchmakers. Very quickly, evidence suggests that the murder might be linked to the fierce competition raging among manufacturers. But the further the investigation progresses, the more this hypothesis fades. The killer’s motives seem deeper and more long-standing. But above all, they seem linked to the very concept of time itself. This becomes immediately apparent to the investigators when they discover a new body, killed using the same modus operandi, at the same time, and with the same weapon as Alice Inek… but 200 km from Besançon. How is this possible? A temporal paradox? Manipulation of time? The investigators are baffled.

Alice Inek, patronne emblématique d’une fabrique de montres haut de gamme est retrouvée assassinée dans la cathédrale Saint-Jean de Besançon, au pied de l’Horloge de Vérité. La capitaine Swann Coréa, fraîchement mutée dans la région, est chargée de l’enquête. Elle est rejointe par le lieutenant Antonin Serrault, un enfant du pays, fils d’ouvriers horlogers. Très vite des éléments laissent penser que le meurtre pourrait être lié à la féroce concurrence qui sévit entre les fabricants. Mais plus l’enquête avance, plus cette hypothèse s’éloigne. Les motivations du tueur semblent plus profondes et plus anciennes. Mais surtout, elles semblent liées au concept du temps, lui-même. C’est ce qui saute aux yeux des enquêteurs lorsqu’ils découvrent un nouveau corps, tué selon le même mode opératoire, au même horaire et avec la même arme qu’Alice Inek … mais à 200km de Besançon. Comment est-ce possible ? Paradoxe temporel ? Manipulation du temps ? Les enquêteurs sont perplexes.
La résolution de cet étrange puzzle les mènera dans les domaines de l’horlogerie traditionnelle aussi bien que dans celui des technologies de pointes.
